Why India?

A Land That Never Stopped Searching for God

India is one of the only civilizations on earth that never abandoned the spiritual search. While other nations chased power and comfort, India kept asking the deepest questions: Who am I? What is the soul? What is my dharma — my true obligation in this world? Millions rise before dawn to pray, fast, study and seek. That thirst is holy, and the Torah of Israel has always honored it.

The bond runs deep. Our sages teach that Abraham himself — the first man to proclaim the One God to the world — sent the sons of his later years eastward, to the land of the East, carrying gifts of spiritual knowledge (Genesis 25:6). India is also one of the very few lands where the Jewish people lived for over two thousand years and were never persecuted by their neighbors. Between the sons of Abraham and the children of the Indus, there is an old family story waiting to be completed.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe, the great Jewish leader of our generation, called on the Jewish people to bring the knowledge of the One God and the seven universal laws to every nation on earth — as the direct preparation for the era of world peace all the prophets promised. DharmaTorah is our answer to that call, from the Chabad House in Dharamsala, in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Meditation That Leads Somewhere

You came to the mountains to quiet the mind. The Torah has been teaching contemplation for three thousand years — and its stillness is not emptiness, but a meeting with the living God. No images, no mantras, no intermediaries.

“Within an ocean of confusion stands a lighthouse — the Chabad House in Dharamsala… Slowly and imperceptibly, a seed of faith is planted in your heart. With time, faith sets root, giving life meaning… turning darkness into light.” From “Himalayan High” — the story of our Chabad House
